In her work, whether it is unique objects or an installation, Matilda Kästel is interested in ambiguity. Objects that fall between categories that slide a bit. Often it’s about creating mixed emotions, for example an experience that borders between beauty and discomfort. In Food Lab, her inspiration has been the heightened awareness of the produce we buy and what it contains. Food stuffs we have considered to be healthy and nourishing for decades have recently turned out to be virtual chemical cocktails, where the health benefits of fruit and vegetables are outnum- bered by the pesticides used in growing them. Based on this, shapes and materials used in laboratory equipment have been turned into beautiful objects meant to serve food and drinks in. With references to the use of chemicals in food, Kästel is commenting and questioning what we choose to place on our dinner tables and into our bodies, giving the food a place of honor.
